Port of Portland Shutdown

Following police violence against protesters at the G8 summit in Genoa, Italy, protesters in Portland, Oregon decided to show solidarity by blockading an Italian cargo ship from being unloaded.  Longshoremen refused to cross the picket line, and a debate ensued about whether the protest was a bona fide labor dispute.

This story, which originally aired on Free Speech in August of 2001, was awarded 2nd Place for spot news in the 2001 Northwest Society of Professional Journalists Excellence in Journalism Awards.
