Can We Predict Police Escalation?

Within the first 27 seconds of a routine traffic stop, we may be able to predict whether that encounter will lead to an escalation. By analyzing body camera footage from nearly 600 stops involving Black drivers, a team of researchers identified a “linguistic signature” that often precedes handcuffing, search, or arrest. The results could help improve police training.
