Gay Pride Banned in Tampa

A shelf of books at the library celebrating gay pride month set off a firestorm in Tampa, Florida, when the county commission voted to ban any government participation or acknowledgment of gay pride.

This story, which originally aired on Free Speech Radio News in June of 2005, was awarded the 2006 National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association/Seigenthaler Excellence in Radio Journalism award.

I also wrote a print story about the gay pride ban, as well as a rise in hate crimes against the GLBT community, for In These Times Magazine.
